Don’t Speak Against What You Really Want

October 1, 2024

Last week, I had a trial session with a senior leader who was exploring Executive Coaching. When I asked what this person wanted to work on, a few comments stood out:

❌ “I don’t have good EQ.”
❌ “I’ve never been a great listener.”
❌ “My Board relationships aren’t that strong.”

So, I asked:

“Do you WANT to have good EQ?”
“Yes.”
“Do you WANT to be a great listener?”
“Yes.”
“Do you WANT to have strong Board relationships?”
“Yes.”

I shared a simple truth: “Every time you speak negatively about yourself – for example, when you say you are not a good listener – you are programming yourself to believe something that you don’t really want.”

✨Avoid speaking in opposition to your true desires. What you focus on grows. ✨

Whenever you make self-deprecating statements, you not only signal your limitations to others but also reinforce them within yourself, holding back your own potential through self-limiting inner talk.

Watch yourself closely. What’s one thing you typically tell yourself that you can rephrase to align better with what you truly want? Share below—I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🤔
