Gratitude: A Universal Language

November 28, 2024

This past weekend, I was invited to a friend’s house here in Singapore to celebrate an early Thanksgiving—a holiday I like to call “America’s best export.”

Surrounded by friends, both new and old (or should I say, “familiar” 😉), the evening was a great reminder of a phrase coined by my friend, Lisa Nirell – “The International Thanksgiving Table.”

Those words perfectly captured the spirit of that night. Why? Among our ten table mates we represented 11 nationalities (some dinner guests had dual nationalities):

🗽 American/U.S.

🍫 Belgian

🎡 British

🥟 Danish

🌴 Filipino

🌾 Indonesian

☘️ Irish

🍕 Italian

🕌 Malaysian

🦁 Singaporean

🍵 Sri Lankan

But despite our diverse backgrounds, we all had one thing in common: gratitude.

It was a wonderful reminder that no matter where we’re from or where we’re headed, gratitude is a universal language that connects us all. With that as the foundation of the evening, the conversation, laughter, stories, good food, and wine flowed for hours.

I am so grateful for these types of moments that bring people together across cultures and continents! 🙏

What is something you are especially grateful for this year?
