A Coaching Client’s Frustration Revealed a Leadership Blind Spot

July 7, 2026

One of my coaching clients was frustrated.

“No matter how hard I work, my boss rarely acknowledges my contributions.”

So I asked her: “How often do you acknowledge your own team?”

Silence… then a smile.

The questions we ask about others usually point back to us.

We often notice what we’re not receiving before we notice what we’re not giving.

Respect… Recognition… Trust… Feedback… Appreciation.

The behaviors we want from others often reveal the leadership habits we most need to strengthen ourselves.

That’s why one of the most powerful leadership questions isn’t: “Why aren’t they giving me what I need?”

It’s: “Am I giving others what I’m hoping to receive?”

In fact, that’s the premise behind a question I believe every leader should ask themselves:

**Would YOU want to work for YOU?**

It’s a simple question – and the answer can be surprisingly revealing.

That’s why I wrote Would YOU Want to Work for YOU™? The updated and expanded edition launches June 23.
