Aiming for “CEO”: Perks or Passion?

September 26, 2024

Jamie Dimon, the long-serving CEO of JPMorganChase, recently inferred that being a CEO is not a goal you set long-term; it’s only through experience that you can really know if the role is one you want.

Becoming a CEO (or any other C-Suite leader) is a significant decision that can shape the trajectory of your professional life. But how do you know if it’s the right path for you?

Through coaching dozens of CXOs through the years, I’ve found that those aiming for the CEO role often fall into two categories:

🌟 Motivated: These leaders are driven by the allure of the title, perks, fame, private jets, and a hefty compensation package. The carrot on the end of the stick keeps them moving forward, but … are they fulfilled?

✨ Inspired: These leaders just “know” in their gut that the CEO post is the right job for them. They’re inspired (and *inspirING*), and they lead the organization with an enlightening vision. They’re passionate about making a difference through the role.

Whether you’re considering a CEO position or any other leadership role, take a moment to reflect: Are you more motivated by external factors or more inspired by internal passion? This difference can help you figure out if you’re on the right track to finding a career path that truly suits you.

👉 Challenge: What drives YOU™ in your career? External rewards, internal fulfillment – or a combination? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇
