Leadership is a Classroom, Not a Courtroom

June 5, 2024

Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the opportunity to shadow several C-Suite executives. Shadowing means I observe leaders during meetings, media briefings, and feedback sessions with their Executive Teams (for example) to see them “in action” and provide helpful feedback. (After all, we can never see ourselves the way others can—our eyes are on the inside, not outside, right? 😉)

One common theme during these sessions is this: True leadership is about creating an environment where team members feel empowered to learn and grow. It’s not about passing judgment or doling out punishment, but about guiding, teaching, and strengthening to achieve full potential at all levels.

**Our greatest success as leaders is not in how we judge others as if we were in a courtroom, but in how we inspire others to be their best in the daily classroom of leadership.**

As leaders, we foster development, encourage curiosity, and support our teams through challenges. Just like a teacher in a classroom, we can provide our teams with tools and opportunities for learning. And when we shift from judging to helping, from berating to acknowledging, we create a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. That is what leads to stronger – and faster – results for the whole company.

How have you or leaders you’ve worked for created a feeling of “classroom” learning within your team by focusing more on helping than judging?

Please share your own thoughts and experiences! We can learn from each other.
