Why Change Feels Hard—Even When You Know You Need It
Last week, I interviewed a potential client who was clearly in the wrong job. She knew it, too.
But when I asked what kept her there, her response was simple:
🌀 “Because it’s just easier.”
I get it. Momentum is a powerful force. Once we’re moving in a certain direction—even if it’s the wrong one—it just feels easier to keep going in that same direction, rather than to change course. For example…
📌 Procrastination
The longer we delay doing a task, the harder it feels to start. “I’ll do it tomorrow” turns into next week, then next month…
📌 Negativity
One complaint leads to another, and before we know it, everything feels like a problem.
📌 Avoiding Tough Conversations
When we postpone a difficult conversation, the more awkward and intimidating it becomes. We don’t address the issue, so we let it fester—until it creates even bigger problems.
Bottom line: The longer we stay stuck, the harder it is to move.
💡 But, here’s the good news: **Momentum works both ways.**
The moment we take even one small step in a new direction, we create new momentum towards a positive change.
🚀 Where in your work or leadership are you letting momentum drive instead of making a conscious choice? What’s one decision you can make today to shift course?
