Dealing with Big Changes at Work: Are You an Egg or a Potato?

September 12, 2024

When Executive Coaching clients are going through very big, transformational changes (and these days, that’s often!), I like to use this metaphor.

Picture in front of you an egg, a potato, and a pot of boiling water.

Think of the big change that’s happening right now as the boiling water.

 – When you place the egg in boiling water, what happens? It gets harder.
 – When you place the potato in boiling water, what happens? It gets softer.

So, the same boiling water that turns an egg hard turns a potato soft. What does this tell us?

🔑 We all handle change and transformation differently.

At work, facing big changes and workplace transformation can make us stronger (like the egg) or softer (like the potato), and both responses can be just as effective.

**Are you more like the egg?**

More Confident:
Adapting to new situations can boost your confidence and reveal hidden strengths.

More Resilient:
Overcoming continuous challenges helps you stay steady and bounce back quickly.

More Innovative:
Tackling tough problems can lead to creative, out-of-the-box solutions.

**Are you more like the potato?**

More Flexible in Leadership:
Shifting from a rigid to a more agile approach during change.

More Intuitive Decision-Making:
Balancing logic with intuition and empathy to handle challenges.

More Employee Recognition:
Focusing on appreciating and recognizing employees, not just business outcomes.

💡 How do YOU react to transformational change? Are you more of an egg or a potato?
