Does Learning Always Have to Hurt?

September 3, 2025

Ever had a moment when you were stopped in your tracks by something you read?

That’s what happened to me when I was in San Francisco a few months ago. I took a bit of time off to wander through the Museum of Modern Art, and on the wall, I came across a quote from Vernon Law, professional basketball player:

📚”Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.”

It really struck me… what a powerful statement.

But then, I started to reflect:
**Does learning always have to come from something painful?**

From years of coaching C-Suite leaders, I don’t believe so.

A difficult decision – like laying off employees, for example – can feel heavy and deeply personal. Leaders often tell me, “It feels painful.”

But when leaders pause to remember they are acting as responsible stewards of the broader organization, protecting the health of a company that impacts tens of thousands, they begin to see the challenge differently.

The lesson isn’t necessarily about pain; it can be about perspective. The “what” may be unavoidable, but the “how” – acting with care, compassion, and grace – that’s what makes the difference.

Because leadership isn’t only about the decisions you make. It’s about the humanity you bring to them.

👉 What do you think? Can lessons come without hardship, or does struggle always teach us best?
