What a wonderful experience it was to connect with Harvard Business School’s new Dean, Srikant Datar, last week, on his first official trip to Asia!
Dean Datar shared his inspiring new vision for the School and talked about so many exciting projects being pursued at HBS, particularly in the digital and data arenas.
My two favorite takeaways from the evening:
- He encouraged us all to “run toward the fire” during these times of change. Try new things that are difficult.
- He reminded us of the mission of HBS: To educate leaders who make a difference in the world. I’ve never really cared for mission statements because they are often not all that actionable. But Dean Datar shared that, for every decision he and his leadership team make, they revert back to this mission statement, to make sure they are holding to that promise – the backbone of what the School stands for.
Run toward the fire – try new things that are difficult – while making sure you stick to the foundational beliefs you have / your organization has. Pretty good lessons!
