Recently, I interviewed a potential client who was clearly in the wrong job. She knew it, too.
But when I asked what kept her there, her response was simple:
I get it. Momentum is a powerful force. Once we’re moving in a certain direction—even if it’s the wrong one—it just feels easier to keep going in that same direction, rather than to change course. For example…
Procrastination
The longer we delay doing a task, the harder it feels to start. “I’ll do it tomorrow” turns into next week, then next month…
Negativity
One complaint leads to another, and before we know it, everything feels like a problem.
Avoiding Tough Conversations
When we postpone a difficult conversation, the more awkward and intimidating it becomes. We don’t address the issue, so we let it fester—until it creates even bigger problems.
Bottom line: The longer we stay stuck, the harder it is to move.
But, here’s the good news: **Momentum works both ways.**
The moment we take even one small step in a new direction, we create new momentum towards a positive change.
Where in your work or leadership are you letting momentum drive instead of making a conscious choice? What’s one decision you can make today to shift course?
