Last week, I attended TEDxSingapore, my first time experiencing a live TED Conferences or TEDx event. (Anyone else attended one of these? They are fun, aren’t they?)
TED’s intention has always resonated with me: “Ideas worth spreading.” And last week delivered exactly that: thought-provoking concepts that are worth spreading.
And it got me thinking… how do you know when an idea is actually a BIG idea?
Here are a few qualities that came to mind. Do any resonate with you?
It makes you gasp, even just a little.
It causes you to pause and reflect.
It pushes you to think beyond what “is” and imagine “what could be.”
It changes your mind about something you thought you already knew.
It’s expansive enough to impact more than just a few people. It can impact everyone.
At the heart of every big idea is imagination. And in a world being reshaped faster than ever, imagination is not just a “nice to have.”
In fact, the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report places creativity near the top of essential leadership skills, for exactly that reason.
Finally, last week reinforced something I often share with the C-Suite executives I coach:
It’s never enough to simply have a big idea or a compelling vision. You must communicate it in a way that others can see it, feel it – and believe in it, too.
Well done to last week’s TEDxSingapore speakers for bringing their ideas to life!
