Is coaching misunderstood?

Is coaching misunderstood?

When I first began as a professional external Executive Coach to major multinationals, most of the people that I talked to didn’t even know what coaching was, or what an important role it could play in the development of leaders and the corporation as a whole.

Fast forward to today, coaching as a profession has changed dramatically over the years.

In the beginning, it was “we’ve-got-to-fix-this-leader’s-derailers” type of situations, and people would whisper in the corridors, “Oh… I heard that person is being coached … don’t tell anybody!”

Now, companies are leveraging coaching as a major benefit for leaders – a reward for those who they want to develop and succeed at all levels of the organization. In fact, for many organizations, coaching has become the norm for high level achievers to take their skills to an even higher-level space. Coaching also serves as a great perk to drive recruitment and improve retention.

But what IS coaching, anyway?

The way I like to explain coaching: It’s about helping you achieve positive, long-term changes in mindset and behavior that will help get you from where you are now to where you want to be in the future. It’s about focusing on the future and what you CAN be as opposed to focusing on where you are today.

So how do YOU see coaching? And how does your company use coaching? I’d love to hear from you!
