Never rob anyone of the chance to fail.

October 28, 2020

“I don’t want my direct reports to make the same mistakes I did!” That’s a phrase I often hear from coaching clients. Yet when I ask those same clients if they’ve learned more from successes or failures, the answer is inevitably, “I gained far more from making mistakes and learning from them.”

It can be hard to allow others to mess up – I have been guilty of the same with my team members. But I have to remind myself that failing is an important part of the learning process. When we don’t allow others the opportunity to fail, we prevent them from gaining powerful learning that they will likely remember for a lifetime.

How has failure helped YOU get to where you are? And how can you “pay that forward” with your team members, allowing them to fail once in a while?
