Debunking Myths: Why a Millennial Has Stayed for a Decade

April 24, 2024

“Millennials don’t stick around,” I was told a decade ago. Yet, just this month, we hosted a celebratory dinner for Jagdish Gill—a millennial—who has been with us for 10 years. Clearly, this demonstrates that’s not always the case.

“Why do you stay?” I asked her.

“Good boss,” she teased initially. 😉

Then, Jagdish elaborated: “You identify what motivates me, you take time to listen. It’s not like I always get everything I want, but I feel heard, and I feel you consider my development and need for growth when you talk projects.”

As a veteran executive leadership coach, it’s crucial for me to practice what I preach. I don’t always get it right, but I strive to create a work environment that is not only enjoyable but also rich with learning opportunities—for everyone. This alignment of my coaching principles with my leadership style helps ensure that we keep evolving as a team.

Have you been with your company for quite a while? Why do YOU stay? What makes your work meaningful? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
