We often talk about the “light at the end of the tunnel,” focusing on the end goal and assuming that everything will be better once we reach it. This phrase gives the impression that the tunnel itself is dark and all the light is at the end.
But I think the real magic happens inside the tunnel.
From my two decades as a senior executive leadership coach, I’ve seen that the tunnel is where challenges, growth, learning, and development occur. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that **the fun is in the tunnel!**
The tunnel is where we experience learning, growth, and transformation. It’s where we face challenges, adapt, and build resilience.
Leadership, in particular, is a journey without end—there is no final “light at the end” —it’s a never-ending path of growth. So, instead of waiting for the light, I encourage my clients to *create* light within the tunnel. Embrace the process, find joy in small victories, both for you and your team, and recognize that growth comes from the journey, not just the destination.
We don’t grow because of the outcome; we grow because of the process of getting to the outcome. Bring light into the tunnel—light it up—and fully enjoy the journey towards your goals.
What light are you creating in your tunnel today, both for you and for your team? I’d love to hear your experiences and insights!
