Which form of confidence do YOU™ embrace?

April 17, 2023

“How do you define confidence?”

This is the question I like to ask clients whenever the topic of confidence arises.

Interestingly, I’ve never heard the same definition twice!

We talk about confidence a lot and the role that it plays in leadership, but… what is confidence, really?

The way I like to define it is: “No matter what happens, I’m going to be OK.”

What I like about this definition is that there is a sense of … humility to it. It’s “humble” confidence, not chest-beating “arrogant” confidence. (BTW, the latter is often a mask for lack of confidence, to be perfectly honest! Would you agree?).

Humble confidence starts first and foremost as an inside job, reflecting the inner work we need to do as leaders. It requires focus on how we are “being” not just what we are “doing.”

How do YOU see confidence and what role does it play for leaders?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!
